In times of high fuel prices and environmental awareness when buying a new car, fuel consumption and the associated CO2 emissions have become an important factor. For this purpose, the ADAC annually determines “the most economical cars of all classes” among the petrol engines. In addition to analyzing fuel consumption, the ADAC assessment also takes into account individual CO2 emissions and the total costs per month. The total cost is made up of various factors, including depreciation, taxes and insurance, inspection and maintenance costs, and the cost of tires and repairs due to wear and tear. The consideration of the total costs is based on an annual mileage of 15,000 km.

Toyota and Mazda offer the most economical models for micro and small cars

In the field of micro and small cars, the Toyota Yaris 1.5 Hybrid CVT and the Mazda 2 Hybrid Pure CVT are among the most economical models. Both vehicles have an output of 85 hp and consume 3.8 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers. Priced at €22,990, the Yaris is slightly cheaper than the Mazda, which is priced at €23,190. If you compare the total costs, the Toyota Yaris has the lowest total costs of 43 cents/km and the Mazda has the lowest total costs of 41.6 cents/km. Another economical model is the Toyota Yaris Cross, also a hybrid. The Yaris Cross 1.5 Hybrid CVT has a higher output of 101 hp and consumes 4.4 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers. The price for the vehicle is 25,340 euros and the total costs are 47.3 cents/km.

KIA has the most economical model in the lower middle class

According to ADAC, the KIA Niro 1.6 GDI Hybrid Edition 7 DCT6 is the most economical model and offers an output of 104 hp with a consumption of 3.4 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers. The vehicle is offered at a price of 32,490 euros and has the lowest total costs of 50.8 cents/km. Another economical hybrid model is the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports 2.0 Hybrid Business Edition. The vehicle has a higher output of 144 hp and consumes 4.4 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers. The price for the vehicle is 37,100 euros and the total costs are 55.3 cents/km. The Suzuki Niro also has an economical hybrid model on offer, the Swace 1.8 Hybrid Comfort+ CVT. With an output of 103 hp and a consumption of 4.5 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers, it is roughly comparable to the Toyota Corolla. The price of the vehicle is 34,790 euros and the total cost is 55.6 cents/km, slightly higher than the Toyota and KIA models.

SkodaToyota and Lexus have the most economical mid-range models

In the middle class, the three most economical models are offered by the VW subsidiary Skoda, Toyota and Lexus. The Skoda Octavia Combi 1.5 TSI e-TEC Base DSG offers an output of 110 hp with a consumption of 4.9 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers. The price for the vehicle is 38,470 euros, there is no information on the total costs. Toyota RAV4 2.5 Hybrid Business Edition is an SUV model and has a higher power of 160 hp. The consumption of the vehicle is 5.6 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers and the price is 43,790 euros. The total cost of the RAV4 is 66.2 cents/km. Lexus’ hybrid model, the NX 350h Automatic, offers an even higher output of 179 hp. The consumption of the vehicle is 5.7 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers and the price is 50,800 euros. The total cost of the vehicle is 79.8 cents/km.

Lexus, Skoda and BMW have the most economical models in the upper class

In the top-end segment, the Lexus ES 300h Business Edition Automatic offers the most fuel-efficient driving. The hybrid vehicle with an output of 160 hp consumes 5.2 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers. The price is 54,350 euros and the total cost of the vehicle is 83.6 cents/km. The Skoda Superb 1.5 TSI Ambition DSG is also an economical petrol model with an output of 110 hp. The consumption of the vehicle is 6.1 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers and the price is 41,310 euros. The total cost of the Superb is slightly higher at 77.0 cents/km. In third place among the most economical models in the upper class is the BMW 520i Steptronic, also a petrol model with an output of 135 hp. The consumption of the vehicle is 6.1 liters SuperPlus per 100 kilometers and the price is 55,150 euros. At 93.5 cents/km, the total cost of the BMW is slightly higher than that of the previous models.
