No fruit is as popular as the apple! At least in Brandenburg. This was determined by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office.
Apple trees grow on 59 percent of the 1,380 hectares of tree fruit area – i.e. on a total of 818 hectares.
► The most common variety: Elstar. The apple tastes particularly intense and slightly sour. Apples are grown primarily in the districts of Potsdam-Mittelmark, Märkisch-Oderland and near Frankfurt (Oder).
► Although sweet cherries are becoming fewer and fewer (since 2017 minus 37 percent), they are still the second most important type of fruit! They grow on 240 hectares of Brandenburg land.
► On the other hand, growth in plums: Here there is a cultivation plus of six percent! The purple fruits thrive on 121 hectares.
The current biggest trend: organic cultivation! It has gained 22 percent in area and now covers 447 hectaress.
