Mosque Den Helder collects 2,740 euros for earthquake victims during the afternoon prayers

Today’s afternoon prayer at the Nida ul Islam Mosque in Den Helder is dominated by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The theme of the sermon is charity, says chairman Rizwaan Khan. The goal is to collect as much money as possible for the earthquake victims. Khan: “Even if you only give a euro, someone can get food from that. That little bit helps.”

Immediately after the earthquakes, questions came to Khan: where can we donate? The mosque’s board chose to collect money during the Friday service.

“It is certainly a shock,” says Khan about the impact of the earthquakes on the Islamic community in Den Helder. “As the days go by, we see more footage, videos of the situation. It touches people very much, it is sad and sad. It is incomprehensible to us.”

The collection yields 2,740 euros, a lot more than the 1,500 euros that Khan had expected in advance. “Very nice to see everyone giving and helping,” he says.
