Lysychansk is the last major city in the eastern Luhansk region that the Russians have not yet conquered. There is heavy fighting.
On Thursday, Governor Sergei Gaidai of the Luhansk region said that it is no longer possible to evacuate the civilians left behind from Lysychansk because of Russian shelling. He then contradicted the Russian claims that they already had half the city in their hands. On Friday, the Ukrainian General Staff did report that “the battle for the city is nearing its climax”.
