“Vauxhall And I” is a monument to romantic contemplation and self-reflection that one could almost call critical if Morrissey didn’t absolve himself of guilt in “Used To Be A Sweet Boy”: “Something went wrong/And I know I can’ t be to blame”.

Boz Boorer and Alain Whyte create smooth songs that showcase Morrissey’s vocals beautifully: “I Am Hated For Loving”, “Now My Heart Is Full”, “The Lazy Sunbathers” – the music is at the height of the lyric.

Steve Lillywhite, the star producer of the ’80s, did his best: almost nothing. The album ends with the reckoning “Speedway”: “I’ve always been true to you/In my own sick way”. Ah!
