Morocco’s Halilhodzic counters Association: Ziyech & Mazraoui without a World Cup chance

“Completed Story”

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Morocco will probably be the only nation to voluntarily give up two of its four most valuable players. Coach Vahid Halilhodzic has decided not to nominate Hakim Ziyech (29, Chelsea) and Noussair Mazraoui (24, Ajax), who is about to move to Bayern Munich. “It’s a closed story,” the Bosnian coach of “France24quoted.

This statement followed a comment by FA chief Fouzi Lekjaâ, who said the door was “open to all Moroccan players, regardless of any differences”. Ziyech and Mazraoui are Morocco’s most valuable footballers after Achraf Hakimi (23, PSG) and Youssef En-Nesyri (24, Sevilla FC).

Halilhodzic justified his decision with a lack of discipline that he did not want to tolerate – the duo not only missed the Africa Cup of Nations, but also the games against DR Congo that were decisive for the World Cup ticket.

Hakimi far ahead
Morocco’s most valuable playersTo overview
“The national team is something sacred. It doesn’t belong to the players, but to the entire nation,” says Halilhodzic, who refuses to be persuaded. “The fact that some see things differently is their problem.” The former coach of Algeria and Ivory Coast has scored an average of 2.26 points per game in 27 games with Morocco since 2019. In World Cup Group F, the North Africans meet Croatia, Belgium and Canada – Croatia is the favorite for Halilhodzic.
