More unrest at FC Den Bosch matches: that’s how it went wrong before

The match between Willem II and FC Den Bosch was suspended on Friday evening after riots in the stands. The ME cleared the branch with FC Den Bosch supporters. It is certainly not the first time that things go wrong with the supporters of FC Den Bosch.

A few weeks ago things still went wrong when TOP Oss came to visit in Den Bosch. Football supporters of both clubs clashed and threw torches and stones at the police. Several flight attendants and officers were injured. The police arrested eleven people in the disturbances.

No darlings
FC Den Bosch supporters Leon Kerssens and Danny van de Griendt acknowledge that things often go wrong at their club’s matches. “I’m not going to say that they are sweethearts at Den Bosch,” says Kerssens. “But it’s too easy to just look at the supporters. If there is no good organization, things go wrong. Then you get things like this.”

Fireworks and stones
Earlier this year it was also restless at FC Den Bosch matches in the Kitchen Champion Division. In April, supporters threw smoke bombs, sausage rolls and beer on the field in De Vliert, during the match against FC Volendam. In May, officers got fireworks, stones and cans of drink at their heads during the game against Helmond Sport. This happened when the police separated the two groups of supporters who were seeking a confrontation with each other.

Ball boy pelted
But incidents with supporters of FC Den Bosch are not something of the past year. In 2017, a match between FC Den Bosch and FC Dordrecht was disrupted with fireworks and torches. During this match, a ball boy was thrown heavy fireworks at him. In 2014, the police arrested twelve supporters during the FC Den Bosch match against TOP Oss. Fighting broke out between fans, after which the ME intervened.

Racism on the field
Also due to racist treatment, matches with FC Den Bosch supporters are stopped more often. In 2013, jungle sounds were heard from the stands. A linesman was also pelted with snowballs, after which the game was stopped. More recently, a referee stopped the match between FC Den Bosch and Excelsior in 2019, after Excelsior player Ahmad Mendes Moreira received racist booing to his head.

However, according to supporters Kerssens and Van de Griendt, the fans of FC Den Bosch are too often pointed out. “We are always the cigar”, says Kerssens. “They unpack a small club, while you see the problems in many more places. That is the fate of FC Den Bosch at the moment.”
