The strings were entangled and a number of critters had managed to wriggle free to hide in nearby bushes. Omroep Gelderland reports about this.
“The volunteers who were there said: it’s just hard not to cry,” says Marja van Gessel of the Animal Ambulance. “It’s sad and mean,” she says. “You don’t see this very often.”
Employees of the Tiel Animal Ambulance have managed to free the dogs from their plight by cutting the strings. That turned out to be a not entirely harmless job. “That was very link, the dogs got excited because there were people and forgot the rope. That’s why they hanged themselves.” The volunteers had to act quickly and cut the strings in time.
A number of dogs were severely neglected. “One was half bald, old, young, pregnant. There was everything in between.” It is not yet known who left the dogs behind. “Of course you don’t know the circumstances, but we know that they were dumped,” says Van Gessel.
All Chihuahuas have been transferred to the animal shelter.
