More than half a century old ‘love letter’ from Cuba found in Vijfhuizen

A striking find in Vijfhuizen: earlier this week, Nancy den Dekker’s children found a letter from 1966 in the village. Nancy suspects that it is a love letter. “It’s hard for me to read, but it has words like single in it.”

The letter was located at the Willemsbankje, well known among the residents of Vijfhuizen the intersection of Zijdewinde and Vijfhuizerweg, says Nancy. “At that little bridge.”

She shared her children’s discovery in a local Facebook group. “It would be nice if the owner is found, it could mean a lot to someone.” She suspects that someone from the region has lost the letter. “But it could also have been someone who was on a bike ride.”

Only an envelope

The letter is special because it is actually just an envelope. “All sides of this have been described,” she says. “But very obliquely and very small,” she explains why she has not yet been able to fully decipher the contents of the letter. “We’ll leave it open as to whether it is a love letter.”

Yet the letter reveals so much that Nancy has high hopes of finding the rightful owner. The envelope shows that it came to the Netherlands by airmail from Cuba and was intended for a certain Mrs. A. Juck vd Mije who lived one floor up at Stadionkade 138 in Amsterdam.

That lady’s name is Alie, because the letter starts with ‘Dear Alie’. The letter also makes it clear that it was written on June 10, 1966, in Miramar, a district of the Cuban capital Havana.

The sender has also written his own name and address in Havana on the back. Because the surnames of the sender and recipient (partly) match, it is obvious that these are words from a husband to his wife.
