But there is no question of a generalization of the supplementary pension: of the total working population, 83 percent accrue a supplementary pension, the FSMA calculated. In addition, there are also many dormant contracts, for example from a previous employer, where no new contributions are paid. There are also noticeably more men (58 percent) than women (42 percent) who benefit from the system.
The supplementary pension is also referred to as the second pillar, and is in addition to the statutory pension.
At the beginning of this year, the accumulated reserves rose to 101 billion euros, 5 percent more in one year. The average accrued reserve for a member approaching retirement age is 58,635 euros. But this amount is heavily distorted by some generous pension plans: the median reserve is only 10,012 euros, according to the FSMA.
For example, self-employed company directors have an average pension reserve of 86,935 euros, compared to 2,386 euros for an employee in a sector plan. Men also build up twice as much on average (73,716 euros) as women (36,429).
