Daley Blind knows what he wants. The Dutchman knows his role at Bayern, but still wants to be more than an emergency nail. He openly provides information about his implanted defibrillator.
The short-term committed Daley Blind wants to fight for a regular place at Bayern Munich as soon as possible. “I have to be ready to help the team when they need me. I know that I might not be the first option, but I will fight to become the first option,” said the 32-year-old Dutchman at the training camp of the German record champions in Doha.
Blind was signed a few days ago for the rest of the current season. Bayern were reacting to the absences of Lucas Hernandez (torn cruciate ligament) and Noussair Mazraoui (inflammation of the heart muscle). Sports director Hasan Salihamidzic called Blind a “very good guy” who has “huge experience”. The sports director revealed that the first contact was made before Christmas. “He immediately signaled to us that we were the first option.”
“Focus is on the defensive line”
World Cup participant Blind had terminated his contract with Ajax Amsterdam shortly after Christmas. In Munich he is intended as an alternative for Alphonso Davies on the left side of defense and in central defence. “Of course we talked about it,” said the international when asked about his favorite position, but emphasized: “My focus is on the defensive line, I don’t care whether I play on the left or in the middle.”
Blind plays with defibrillator
Blind has been playing with an implanted defibrillator for years after a myocarditis. But he doesn’t see that as a problem. “I showed that I can play at the highest level, it was never a problem. I have faith in my body,” he said in Doha. Everything is done in close consultation with the respective medical department. “I feel fit.”
