American Olympic champion arrested by Russian authorities Brittney Griner is in good condition given the conditions, the U.S. Embassy in Russia reports.
Authorities arrested a two-time Olympic basketball winner at Moscow airport in February. Griner was alleged to have tried to smuggle substances classified as narcotics.
Griner is facing up to ten years in prison in Russia. The athlete’s attorney denies the allegations. The trial is scheduled to begin later this year.
The griner will remain in custody until at least May. Information about the athlete’s well-being has been leaked to the public, which has raised concerns abroad.
The U.S. embassy finally got to meet Griner. A spokesman for the Moscow embassy says Griner is okay with the circumstances.
The American authorities are also in constant discussion with their Russian counterparts about getting Griner out of the country.
The messages from the US and Russia about the delay in meeting Griner also differ greatly.
According to Russia, diplomats would have had the opportunity to meet a long time ago. According to the American camp, the Russian authorities have repeatedly either refused or made it difficult to meet.
