More than a hundred people killed in earthquake in northern China, total extent of damage still unclear | Abroad

Northern China was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on Monday evening. At least 111 people were killed. The death toll is still rising.

The provinces of Gansu and Qinghai were particularly affected. Houses collapsed and roads were blocked in both provinces. At least 200 residents were injured. Some places are without electricity and water. Rescue efforts are in full swing. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for every effort to save people.

The quake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers, about a hundred kilometers from Lanzhou, the provincial capital of Gansu. The emergency services were called at just after 11:59 PM (4:59 PM Dutch time).

Earthquakes occur regularly in China. In August there was a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in the east of the country. 23 people were injured. Several buildings collapsed.
