More than 700 kilos of waste collected from Texel nature reserve: “Even lighter and polyurethane foam found”

After storm Corrie, Dudley and Eunice, a lot of waste ended up in the De Slufter nature reserve on Texel. And that must go as soon as possible, according to Staatsbosbeheer. That’s why they organized a clean-up campaign today, with success.

The Slufter was largely under water after the major storms of last week. The nature reserve is now dry again, but a lot of waste has remained. “A lot of litter comes from the seawater,” says forester Mariette. That is why about eighty volunteers signed up today to look for waste in the large nature reserve.

“I especially liked a lot of plastic, rope and Styrofoam”

Young and old braved the wind today to look for large objects such as wood and rope, but also searched for small items such as lighters and pieces of plastic. “I especially found a lot of plastic, rope and Styrofoam,” says a young volunteer.

Hot chocolate

After a long search, the volunteers brought the blue garbage bag filled with waste to the forest rangers and a cup of coffee or hot chocolate was ready in the cafe further down. Mariette looks back on a successful day. She estimates that more than 700 kilos of waste have been collected. “Working together to make this nature reserve free of dirt again, that can make me very happy,” says the forester.
