More than 35 babies die every week in Europe from the effects of air pollution

In 2019, 5,801 children and young people in Europe and Central Asia died from causes related to air pollution. A large majority, about 85 percent, of fatalities under the age of 20 did not reach their first birthday. For Europe, this concerns 2,017 babies who died. This is according to data released by UNICEF. The United Nations Children’s Fund warns that air pollution is the biggest risk factor for premature death and health problems.
