The absolute record was set last Friday, when the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported almost 35,000 new cases in one day.
In the past seven days, RIVM received a message that the corona virus has been diagnosed 217,818 times. That equates to an average of 31,117 cases per day. For the first time since the start of the corona crisis almost two years ago, that average has exceeded 30,000. The average is rising for the sixteenth day in a row.
Corona patients in hospitals
There are still 358 corona patients in intensive care units, 17 fewer than a day earlier. The number of people with corona on ICs has been falling for weeks, almost continuously. Exactly one month ago, there were still 630 corona patients in these departments.
In the nursing wards, the number of corona patients decreased by 55 to 1002 in the past 24 hours. That is less than half compared to the 2118 that were there a month ago.
In the past 24 hours, 12 new corona patients were admitted to the ICUs. 100 new patients were brought into the nursing wards. These admissions figures have also fallen sharply in recent weeks.
However, the LCPS has been assuming for several weeks that the take-up figures will rise again this month. According to the hospital organization, this is due to the advancing more contagious omikron variant of the coronavirus.

The number of reports of deaths, on the other hand, remains relatively low. In the past day, RIVM received a message that thirteen people have died as a result of their infection. Just because their deaths have been reported now, doesn’t mean they died in the past day. In addition, the actual number of deaths may be higher, because it is not mandatory to report that a corona patient has died.
In the past seven days, 86 deaths have been recorded, an average of about 12 per day. The death rate has thus fallen to the level at the end of October, when the current wave had just started.
