Terrible accident in the northern Italian metropolis of Venice: A bus fell from a bridge on Tuesday evening!
There are “many victims,” said Mayor Luigi Brugnaro. He spoke of a “tragedy”. As the Ansa news agency reports, citing the prefecture, there are said to be more than 20 dead and many injured and missing people. The prefect of Venice, Michele Di Bari, said there were 15 survivors of the accident.
The accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on the overpass of the connecting road that leads from Mestre to Marghera and the A4 motorway. As “agenzianova” reports, the bus fell about ten meters from the Vempa overpass in Mestre. It landed between a warehouse and the tracks of Mestre train station, where it caught fire.
It is unclear whether minors were among the victims, as well as why the bus fell from the bridge.
Numerous ambulances and police rushed to the scene of the accident. The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, also recently arrived at the scene of the accident. “The bus involved in the accident was traveling from Venice to Marghera and was full of people coming home from work,” La Repubblica quoted Mayor Brugnaro as saying.
The mayor continued to “RaiNews”: “It appears that the bus was also transporting tourists to a campsite. Apparently there were many foreigners on board, including children. We found some Ukrainian documents.”
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (46) was also dismayed after the bus accident. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends. “I am in close contact with Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to follow the news of this tragedy,” Meloni said in a statement.
It was a methane-powered bus. As the Ansa news agency further reports, the bus is said to be a campsite shuttle.
