More than 1,500 animal species have same-sex sexual acts: is there an evolutionary advantage?

Despite more than 1,500 species of animals, from bats to cows, exhibiting same-sex sexual behavior, it remains an “evolutionary mystery” to science. At first glance it does not appear to contribute to the survival of these species or the continuation of the genetic line of an individual. However, in a new study, scientists show that sexual behavior between members of the same sex has evolved independently multiple times in hundreds of different animal species and its invaluable value in forging complex social relationships.
