Nyon (dpa) – The European law enforcement agency Europol and the European Football Union UEFA believe that more match-fixing is possible as a result of the corona pandemic.
“Organized crime quickly understood that many football clubs have suffered financially from the consequences of Covid-19. And where there is less money, players, coaches, officials and even club boards are increasingly susceptible to corruption through manipulation,” said Burkhard Mühl, Head of Europol’s European Financial and Economic Crime Center (EFECC) in a statement.
A total of 109 representatives of law enforcement and judicial authorities as well as national football associations from 49 countries met at the Europol headquarters in The Hague in the Netherlands on Tuesday. The aim was to find new ways of investigating corruption cases in sport and match-fixing.
