More frequent nuisance at schoolyard in Prinsenbeek where man was stabbed

On Tuesday evening, local residents learned little about the stabbing in Vaandelstraat in Prinsenbeek, for which a 15-year-old boy from Breda was arrested the same evening. This happened on or near the schoolyard of primary school De Griffioen in Prinsenbeek. A square where, according to local residents, young people often cause a nuisance.

“I saw a gentleman lying on the street,” says a resident about what she learned about the stabbing. But she doesn’t know what happened. “We’ll find out later, I thought.” She is shocked, but she does not feel unsafe. “You don’t expect it here. Something like this happens in the city, not in a village.”

The stabbing happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A man was found injured on Vaandelstraat, near the intersection with Tournooiveld, local residents say. They don’t know who the victim is.

“Often late louts with mopeds in the schoolyard. Also fights.”

While one resident talks about ‘a quiet neighbourhood’, others say that there are almost always young people hanging around in the schoolyard. Also in the evening.

“Legged-up louts with mopeds”, says a man who lives near the schoolyard. He talks about a lot of noise and nuisance. Balls against windows and doors. Everywhere cans, empty bottles and even empty crates of beer that are left behind. He also says there are regular fights. “A few times a week,” he says.

“Children were bored in the schoolyard, smoking cigarettes.”

A woman who lives opposite the square also talks about boys with mopeds on the square. “I don’t go out at night,” she says. But she also saw nothing of the stabbing.

According to her, children were ‘boring a bit, smoking cigarettes’ in the schoolyard. “One walked away crying. I therefore thought that there was something wrong with the children themselves. Later I heard about the stabbing when officers were at our door to ask if we had seen anything.”

Police say the stabbing victim was conscious when he was taken to hospital. The young suspect was taken to the detention center on Tuesday evening to make a statement. Early Wednesday morning, the police could not say more about the case.
