More control: Tiktok launches word filter and age lock

From BZ/dpa

There are a lot of things you just don’t want to see, some you shouldn’t see at all, depending on your age. Tiktok is therefore introducing two new tools that influence the content displayed.

Tiktok introduces new features designed to improve control over unwanted and inappropriate content.

On the one hand, the possibility of putting words or hashtags on a blacklist yourself will be rolled out in the coming weeks, as the company announced.

This will prevent videos tagged with those hashtags from appearing on the app home page (For You) and in the Following feed. Videos can already be marked as “Not interesting”. However, this only means that other videos created by the same user are skipped.

Another upcoming innovation is age restrictions: A new system is intended to classify content based on its suitability for a younger audience. If a video contains “mature or complex themes” and “fictional scenes that may be too scary or intense for younger audiences,” the post will be blocked for under-18s.

This group would then only see: “Post not available. This post has an age limit.” According to the information, the blocking system has not yet been fully developed, but should nevertheless go into operation as “a first version” in the next few weeks.

If you register with Tiktok, you must enter your date of birth. The minimum age for use is 13 years. If parents install the app on their smartphone themselves, they can activate a mode to accompany their child on Tiktok.
