More babies born with Down syndrome again: “May be related to programs like ‘Down the Road’”

In 2022, 38 children with Down syndrome were born in Flanders. The figures have been on a consistent downward trend for a long time, especially since the NIP test was reimbursed in 2017. In 2018, 24 children were born with trisomy-21, by 2021 that number had dropped to 16. While before the reimbursement in 2017 there were still 42. “This is a big deal,” says gynecologist Hendrik Cammu (UZ Brussels) about the latest figures.
