This year, more centenarians live in Limburg than last year. The increase has been visible since 2018.
At present, our province has a total of 165 centenarians, of whom 148 are women. The oldest resident of Limburg is Helena Santing-Krikken from Brunssum. She turned 108 at the end of March.

Significantly increased
Limburg is one of the provinces where the number of people over 100 has increased significantly in recent years. That was also the case in Flevoland and Groningen. Most centenarians (605) live in the province of South Holland.
Big difference
Last year there were still 158 Limburgers who are older than 100. The difference between 2020, the first corona year, and 2019 is especially large. In 2019 there were 125 centenarians, while that number grew to 147 in 2020.
Little baby boom
Nationally, more and more people have blown out more than a hundred candles. This now concerns almost 2.6 thousand Dutch people. A few years ago, CBS predicted that the group of centenarians would grow rapidly from 2020 onwards due to a small baby boom after the First World War. So far, that prediction seems to have come true.
The number of centenarians has grown considerably in 2020 and 2021, despite the fact that a lot more people died in those years due to corona than expected.
