More and more cameras in Brabant, especially at homes, huge increase

There are more and more security cameras in our province. The number of cameras increased by 7.5 percent in the past year. The increase is particularly large in residential homes: since 2019 the number of cameras there has almost doubled. That is according to figures that VPNGids.nl, a website about online safety, requested from the police.

Where in 2021 41,828 cameras were registered in Brabant, there are now 44,956. Most of them are located in large cities such as Den Bosch and Eindhoven.

If you look at the number of security cameras per 10,000 inhabitants, this is the top 5:

  1. Veldhoven: 404
  2. Den Bosch: 356
  3. Helmond: 342
  4. Geldrop-Mierlo: 309
  5. Vught: 305

It is also unclear to VPNGids.nl why Veldhoven is at the top of the list. If you don’t want to be filmed, it’s best to go to Altena. There are the fewest cameras with 54 per 10,000 inhabitants.

Doorbells and Security Systems
In particular, the private use of cameras is growing explosively. Since 2019, that number has almost doubled. According to a VPNGids.nl spokesperson, this is mainly because cameras are becoming more and more accessible.

“Think of doorbells, which contain a camera. Or the security systems for the home, of which you see more and more commercials on TV. They all count.”

Incidentally, the actual number of cameras will be much higher. “These are the numbers from the police database, but not all doorbell cameras will be registered, for example.”

With the increase of 7.5 percent, Brabant remains below the national average of 9.4 percent. In Zeeland, the number of cameras increased most last year (18.8 percent), in Friesland the least (4.5 percent).
