The protected pedunculate oak on the Riegmeer business park will nevertheless be preserved. The tree along the Albartsweg in Hollandscheveld will be transplanted in the autumn of 2024 to a location on the edge of Riegmeer, about 250 meters from its current location.
That is the outcome of consultations by the municipality with the IVN, climate mayor Grietje Loof, network operators Tennet and Rendo and representatives of the petition for the preservation of the oak. Research shows that the tree is healthy and has a life expectancy of more than fifteen years. The municipality of Hoogeveen will withdraw the permit for felling the oak.
The tree, about twenty meters high, was in danger of being cut down to allow for the construction of an electricity station. That station is necessary if new companies want to establish themselves on the site in the future. At the beginning of this year, a petition was started to prevent the imminent felling of the oak.
Research has shown that the tree cannot remain in its current location. At three hectares, the size of the electricity station on Riegmeer is such that the oak cannot remain in its current location. The station cannot move to another location. That is very tight because a lot of cables have to be connected to it.
With the right transplanting method and good care before, during and after transplanting, the chance of a successful relocation is estimated at 95 percent. A new location has been found on the corner of Langedijk and Albartsweg. There is enough space for the oak here.
