A few days before the Bundesliga cracker against RB Leipzig there is good news at Borussia Dortmund. The biggest unlucky BVB in the recent past is approaching his comeback.
Since April 2021, with a short break, Mateu Morey has been suffering. At that time, the right-back from Borussia Dortmund suffered a total loss in his right knee in the semifinals of the DFB Cup against Holstein Kiel, including a cruciate ligament rupture.
It took almost a year and a half before Morey made his comeback in BVB’s U23s in the 3rd division against Rot-Weiss Essen in mid-August 2022. A few weeks later, the 22-year-old Spaniard suffered another serious injury, this time in the other knee. Again Morey had to go under the knife.
“Accordingly, we will have to do without him in the next few months. Of course, that hurts us a lot,” said Edin Terzic at the time, referring to the professional who was popular with teammates and fans.
Now, almost five months later, there is a silver lining for Morey: As the “Ruhr Nachrichten” reports, the native Mallorcan completed part of the BVB team training for the first time on Tuesday – another big step towards a comeback for Morey.
BVB: No worries about Mateu Morey’s position
However, a return to play is not expected in the near future. Both BVB and Morey himself will not take any chances on the way to his recovery. Terzic and Co. should carefully reintroduce him to the team.
In terms of personnel, BVB is currently comparatively lush in Morey’s position: new signing Julian Ryerson’s preferred role is that of right-back.
Terzic still has the recovered Thomas Meunier and Marius Wolf up his sleeve. In the first half of the season, the regular central defender Niklas Süle also worked on the right side of defense several times.
