The large price of Formula 1 in Monaco could become a duel between McLaren and Ferrari. Monegasse Charles Leclerc dominated all three training sessions in his birth and hometown Monte Carlo. In qualifying on Saturday, however, Lando Norris put the best time in the orange-black-colored McLaren.
In the third qualification section, Piatri and Norris first undercut the course record. Charles Leclerc also rapidly ran quickly in the narrow curves of the illustrious port city on the Mediterranean. But with a time of 1,09.954 minutes, the Briten for the first time put a time under 1.10 minutes Norris’ teammate Oscar Piatri came in fourth place, Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari. Defending champion Max Verstappen had to be satisfied with fifth place with over seven tenth seconds behind the polesitter.
Disaster at Mercedes
The qualification in a disaster ended for Mercedes. First, the young Italian flew off in the first round in the harbor chicane and damaged his racing car so badly that he had to be satisfied with starting place 15. “That was a very unnecessary mistake”said the youngster at Sky. In the second section, however, Gerorge Russell sweared like a berserk when he left.
In the port tunnel, his silver arrow stopped: he completely lacked the propulsion to have the car had to have electrical problems. The Brit will start in 14th place in the prestiget race in Monte Carlo in front of its young teammate. If the race runs reasonably normal – without rain and larger interruptions – the race weekend for Toto Wolff’s team may have run.
Hülkenberg Passabler 14.
The qualifying for Nico Hülkenberg was quite passable. The experienced clean pilot made it to Q2 and put his racing car in 13th place in the starting line-up. Despite the very courageous driving style, there was nothing more for the Emmericher, in which Hülkenberg partially touched the plastic covers of the guardrails.
