Monnickendam also wants to be a tourist attraction: ‘more spread, less nuisance’

The phenomenon of tourism has existed in Marken for over 150 years and it is becoming increasingly crowded on the former peninsula. But where Marken is overrun by tourists, many hit people Monnickendam about† “That is why tourism must be spread throughout Waterland,” says Karin Vlug, coordinator of the Waterland Promotion Foundation.

Now that the high season is approaching, tourists are able to find Marken again en masse, resulting in large crowds. Monnickendam is much less known among tourists. Sebastiaan Bouters of Klompenmakerij Marken has an explanation for this. “There is much less to do in Monnickendam. You can eat well, but there is almost nothing else.”

Waterlandsmuseum de Speeltoren thinks differently about this. The museum is in fact jumping for more visitors† The buses now continue to Volendam and Marken, but the museum would like to see buses also stopping in Monnickendam in the future.

To spread

According to Karin Vlug, coordinator of the Waterland Promotion Foundation, tourism in Waterland must be spread. “All centers in Waterland have their own unique points that are worth visiting. If the tourists only stay on Marken, there will be even more nuisance. There must be a fair distribution, which is why we want to make a nice combination for the tourist. Waterland has a lot to offer.”
