‘Mom and dad were always away’

Every house has its cross, even that of TV benefactor Natasja Froger. Her son Maxim Froger complains in a Christmas interview with the Weekend about how little his parents were there before.

Maxim Froger is not exactly of good behavior. The usually well-informed juice queen Yvonne Coldeweijer has released some very intense juice about this celebrity scion. Where does his strange behavior come from? After all, his mother Natasja Froger acts as a benefactor 24/7. Well, on TV anyway.

‘They were never there’

The Weekend now has a major interview with Maxim, who was featured this year as a candidate in Expedition Robinson. He is asked about his own celebrity status. “Certainly, I get to do really fun things, I think that’s great. But it’s not like I’ve always wanted that.”

In fact, Maxim used to want anything but to become a star, because he felt that his parents – both big stars – were not there enough for him. “I grew up with my mom and dad while they were famous. Mom and Dad were always away. Or well, always away is a strong word, but mom has been making TV programs since I was eleven.”

Heart in Action

Mom was on the road all the time for Heart in Action, but was her heart in action enough at home? So Maxim doubts it. And daddy? “Dad was of course performing a lot, so we often went along to watch. Then we were always in the spotlight. You learn to deal with that, but I also wanted to stay in the background a bit.”

Maxim just wanted to be at home with mom and dad and not always be put in a corner backstage. “In the beginning, fame didn’t really appeal to me, but then I talked to my dad about it for a long time and he said: ‘But buddy, what do you enjoy doing most?’ And that is singing, it is difficult to stay in the background.”

Celebrity son

And so Maxim is yet another celebrity son who wants to sing, dance, present or influence. Wouldn’t he be better off just learning a trade? It won’t work at all with Marco Borsato’s son. “Luca is a sweet boy, a friend of mine. He also does his thing nicely.”

Actually, life as a celebrity’s son is just tough, Maxim concludes. “Of course, as a ‘son of’ it may be easier to get into certain places, but it is also more difficult. If you get anywhere, you have to be as good as your father, otherwise people will quickly think you are a bad singer.”
