Luka Modric on Wednesday extended his expiring contract with Real Madrid until mid-2023. The 36-year-old playmaker won the Champions League for the fifth time with the Spanish top club last month.
Modric has been playing for Real Madrid since mid-2012, when he took over from Tottenham Hotspur. After a difficult start, the Croatian midfielder grew into an undisputed basic player at ‘De Koninklijke’.
With five Champions League final victories (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022) and three Spanish titles (2017, 2020 and 2022), Modric has expanded his honors list considerably during his period at Real Madrid.
In his decade in Madrid service, Modric played no fewer than 436 official duels, in which he scored 31 times.
The new contract for the 2018 Golden Ball winner comes as no surprise. Both Modric himself and the club management of ‘De Koninklijke’ repeatedly hinted that a new agreement would be a matter of time.
