Jeremiah Green, drummer and founding member of the American indie rock band Modest Mouse, died on December 31, 2022 at the age of 45 – a few days after the band made his illness public.
The group mourns Green in an official statement. “I don’t know how to put it in a bearable way: Today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah. He retired and just walked away. I’d like to say a few nice words right now, but it’s just not the time. These will come later, and from many people. Please appreciate all the love you give, receive, have given and will receive. Jeremiah was all about love. We love you,” the statement said.
Drummer Simon O’Connor talks about their shared history
The group’s drummer, Simon O’Connor, released a lengthy post paying tribute to his colleague. “Jeremiah, you are the reason I joined Modest Mouse. When I got the call two years ago, I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t like the feeling. I walked in completely blind and it was terrifying. When I got your number I called you and you answered… Two hours later I hung up the phone and I was like, ‘Shit, yeah. Finally,'” it says.
Cancer only recently announced
Just a few days ago — on December 28, 2022 — the band went public with the news of Green’s cancer, after several people around him had already announced it. Green had stage four cancer, it was said at the time, but the exact type of cancer was not disclosed. Modest Mouse singer Isaac Brock was initially cautiously optimistic: “Jeremiah was recently diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. The treatment seems to be going well and having a positive effect. Jeremiah and I believe in the power of positive energy. So if you would be so kind as to send Jeremiah and his family ‘good vibes’ (to quote Jeremiah) that would be awesome.”
