Short-term referee change

Star players Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez led Inter Miami to the biggest victory in the club’s young history in Major League Soccer. In the 5-0 (3-0) Florida duel with Orlando City, Messi and Suárez each scored twice. It was the first double in the MLS for both of them. Inter Miami, which clearly missed the play-offs last year, is at the top of the Eastern Conference with seven points from three games.
Suárez scored the first two goals (4th/11th) on an assist from German-born Julian Gressel and initiated the other three through Robert Taylor (29th) and Messi (57th/62nd). The Uruguayan has become the fourth former FC Barcelona professional to play for co-owner David Beckham’s team this season, alongside Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

It is also the first full season for eight-time world footballer Messi as well as Busquets and Alba for Inter Miami, which has been part of Major League Soccer since 2020, which bases its season on the calendar year. Last season, all three moved to Miami in the summer. Messi scored eleven goals in his 14 competitive games for Miami in 2023 and led the team to the first title in its history with victory in the Leagues Cup.
The special status Inter Miami has with its stars in the USA is also reflected in a piquant personnel change: referee Guilherme Ceretta was replaced at short notice on Saturday by fourth official Jaime Herrera after photos appeared on social media showing Ceretta in merchandise.
