The Mitte district wants to be reimbursed by the “Last Generation” for the costs of removing the paint on the world clock.
“The district office will initially pay in advance and pay for the cleaning of the world clock,” its spokesman Christian Zielke told the German Press Agency on Thursday.
“At the same time, the district will assert claims for damages against the alleged perpetrators.” The names of the perpetrators are known to the police. “A criminal complaint was filed by the district.”
Damage to the world clock has been repaired
According to the district office, removing the orange paint that the climate smearers sprayed on the world clock in mid-October cost around 14,000 euros. According to the information, the paint has now been completely removed and damage to the lighting has also been repaired.
The climate protection group had already sprayed the Brandenburg Gate in mid-September. Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) put the cost of the removal at 115,000 euros on Monday and also announced that he would invoice the group for it.
The world clock, a work by the GDR designer Erich John, is located near Alexanderplatz train station and was opened to the public in 1969. It shows the earth’s time zones and the cities within them. Above the clock in the shape of a cylinder, a model shows the solar system. The clock is a listed building and has been a popular meeting place for appointments for decades.
