What happened? Wirtz was substituted at the second half. A little later, Bremen’s Mitchell wisely stepped on his right foot. The Leverkusener then fell unhappily and had to leave the place after only eight minutes. “I think I start the pass from Flo and spy the ball away,” remembered Weiser after the game.

The 30-year-old and Wirtz know each other from time together in Leverkusen. In the 2020/21 season, they ran together for the Werkelf. There was initially no exact diagnosis. It is at least questionable whether Wirtz can participate in the round of 16 in the Champions League against FC Bayern next Tuesday. Leverkusen has to catch up with a 0-3 deficit from the first leg in the fight for moving into the quarter-finals.
