Missing toddler (3) survives two days in harsh conditions in forests of Montana | Abroad

A missing American toddler has been found starving and hypothermic after two days. Ryker Webb (3) spent all that time roaming the forests of Montana in harsh conditions. He says he survived by taking shelter in a log cabin.

Webb disappeared Friday afternoon after playing with the dog in his garden in Troy. The police were notified two hours later. His family was searching for him, so in the end it was the neighbor who made the call.

The circumstances of his disappearance were particularly disturbing. The environment consisted of tall trees and thick bushes, with pumas or bears that could suddenly appear. At night the temperature dropped to five degrees. The rain and thunderstorms also ensured that visibility was reduced to almost zero.

Helicopters and drones

Everything was therefore pulled out to find the boy: volunteers combed the neighborhood, helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs were also deployed. Local residents received a message with the urgent advice to inspect their site extra thoroughly.

On Sunday, then, there was liberating news: Ryker had turned up alive and well two miles from where he had disappeared. “A family had gone to take a look at their log cabin just to be sure. And yes, there they suddenly heard a voice,” said Sheriff Darren Short.

“A lot of fear”

The toddler was obviously hungry and thirsty, but luckily he was in relatively good health. “He was very scared,” Short continued. “From the answers to my questions, I could deduce that he had left for a long walk on his own. He then became tired along the way. When I made it clear that he would be reunited with his parents, he revived.”

After a brief medical examination at the hospital, Ryker is now coming home from his adventure. Police still want to know why it took two hours before the alarm was sounded. “Why wasn’t he more closely monitored? We definitely want to clarify that.”

The boy also turned out to have left clues himself. “He is very interested in bugs and insects. We found that very recently some stones had been turned over on a path that ran at the back of his home. At least that way we knew in which direction to look”, concludes Short.
