Missing swimmer found dead in Bison Bay near Nijmegen

A deceased person was found in the Bison Bay in the Ooijpolder near Nijmegen on Wednesday. An investigation by the police revealed that it was a 64-year-old man from the Zeeland municipality of Sluis, who had gone swimming in the lake on Tuesday. Police and fire brigade searched for the man on Tuesday evening and Wednesday with divers and a special search team. A crime has been ruled out, according to the police.

The man was a participant in the Four Days Marches, who stayed at the Four Days Marches camping in the Ooijpolder. Another camping guest would have gone swimming with De Zeeuw on Tuesday afternoon. When the man did not return to the campsite, this runner sounded the alarm. A bag with the swimmer’s belongings was found on the edge of Bison Bay on Tuesday evening.

The organization of the Four Days Marches sympathizes with the relatives of the swimmer. “We have heard from the media that it concerns a participant in our event. Although the accident did not take place during the march and the walking days, we regret the news,” a spokeswoman said.
