Misery with packages that are not delivered: ‘Straight to the collection point’

“Do more people have bad experiences with PostNL? Almost all packages go straight to the collection point without coming to us first.” Richard Danklof from Rijen posted this message on social media. He was certainly not the only one. Soon he had more than a hundred responses.

“Is there even a delivery person in our village?” Richard wonders. “My girlfriend is always at home. So packages can simply be delivered to our home. But as standard we receive the message ‘We missed you’ and the package is immediately sent to the collection point.”

“I thought delivery people were too lazy to deliver.”

And Richard is not the only one, as it turns out after the call on Facebook. Bo responds: “I thought the delivery people were too lazy to deliver to an apartment complex.” Bo was also at home and received a notification that her package was being delivered to the collection point. Gerda writes: “I had the same thing, three weeks ago. And now I have lost another package.”

Sometimes things go well, as is evident from Nicole’s response: “We often have a regular delivery person, a super nice guy! And if we are not at home, the package is neatly left with the neighbors or with others in the street.”

With all the undelivered packages, you would expect it to be very busy at the collection point in Rijen and it is. Last summer we reported that the packages were literally there for the taking. The store was still closed at the time, so the PostNL driver simply left them on the sidewalk and left.

“When you come in, you trip over the packages.”

“You should just walk in,” Richard now says about the collection point in the Hoofdstraat in the center of the village. “When you come in, you trip over the packages. You’re shocked.”

That turns out not to be so bad when we take a closer look. The racks in the store are indeed packed, but otherwise the store makes a fairly tidy impression. It turns out we’re a day late. “You should have been here yesterday, it was packed,” says the friendly employee. “The packages were stacked against the counter from the entrance.” Soon three by two meters were full of postal packages.

When we tell them we are from Omroep Brabant, the employee is resolute: no cameras, no interview. “That got me in trouble last time.” He does want to say that he is disappointed with the situation, because he is being addressed about the situation in angry messages on Facebook. “He can’t do anything about it,” says Richard: “PostNL arranges this this way and he is swamped.”

PostNL announced on Friday afternoon that it was unable to respond to the situation in Rijen. “During this busy period, many PostNL points are also extra busy.” According to a spokesperson, the company has good contact with the collection point in Rijen: “And if additional actions are needed during busy periods, we will discuss that.” PostNL also hopes that people will contact us if there are any problems: “Then we can look at the matter and take action if necessary.”
