Mischa Bredewold solos to victory on the VAM mountain

Mischa Bredewold has won the European women’s road title. Bredewold broke away from the peloton ten kilometers before the finish and crossed the line solo on the VAM mountain.

Compatriot Lorena Wiebes came second at four seconds, followed by Lotte Kopecky from Belgium.

The Swiss Marlen Reusser tried several times to close the gap to Bredewold, but was always overtaken by Demi Vollering.

“I have no words for it,” said the 23-year-old rider from Apeldoorn in front of the NOS microphone after the finish. “It’s like I’m living in a kind of haze.”

“We wanted to attack with the Dutch team in a kind of carousel. I was in the flow and the perfect moment came in the last lap. Until the last two kilometers I still expected that I might be overtaken. But then I thought, I have to pushing as long as possible. It’s bizarre.”

It is the second gold medal for the Netherlands at the European Cycling Championships. Yesterday Ilse Pluimers won the U23 road race.
