the agreement last October

In October 2023, the manufacturer born from the FCA-PSA merger announced an investment of 1.5 billion to acquire 20% of the Chinese company specialized in the production of electric cars. The agreement also included the establishment of Leapmotor International, a 51:49 joint venture led by Stellantis, with exclusive rights to export and sell, as well as manufacture, Leapmotor products outside the China region. In 2022 Leapmotor delivered 111 thousand urban electric vehicles (NEVs) and over the next three years, Leapmotor’s product plan will cover the entire range of segments A to E, based on a technical architecture with three highly scalable platforms.

“strategic move”

Last week Tavares, during a roundtable with the press on the occasion of the 2023 results, had not ruled out this possibility, “if there was a business opportunity”. The CEO had underlined that Stellantis “made a strategic move” in the partnership with the Chinese company and “if we were to have the opportunity, because it makes economic sense, to produce Leapmotor cars in Italy we will do so. It is one of the big assets that we we bring”. The group simply confirmed the manager’s words without providing further details on the matter.

redundancy fund

The layoffs will begin at the Turin site in March with the lines of the Maserati and the 500 electric which will work on a single shift. Last week Tavares himself underlined that at Mirafiori the 500e “was a victim of the absence of incentives, but not only in Italy but also in Germany”. Regarding the future of Mirafiori and Pomigliano, CEO Stellantis had said that “to reach the goal of one million (of cars produced in one year in Italy, ed), of course we need all our factories. So obviously there is a future for Mirafiori and Pomigliano.”
