As previously announced on April 14, 2022, Minister Van der Wal for Nature and Nitrogen will not start hunting the rabbit in the coming hunting season (2022/2023). This applies to all provinces. In addition, the minister will not open the hunt for the hare in the provinces of Groningen, Limburg and Utrecht next season. The reason is the declining population trend.

With a signature of the scheme and publication in the Government Gazette on 28 July the arrangement is now final. Together with the wild duck, pheasant and wood pigeon, the rabbit and the hare are on the so-called game list. In the coming season (2022/2023) it is still possible to hunt for the wild duck, wood pigeon and pheasant.

On 14 April 2022, the minister announced her intended decision on this scheme in a letter to the House of Representatives. Until June 10, 2022, anyone could respond to the decision via an internet consultation. The subject is alive among many people and this is reflected in the many responses to the internet consultation. No new insights have emerged from the responses that justify an amendment to the decision.

The causes of the decline in species and the next steps to be taken can be found in the news item of April 14, 2022.
