The road safety institute is regarded as the expert and is constantly asked to map, analyze or solve traffic phenomena. Among other things, the BOB campaign comes from their sleeve. The institute is therefore tasked with halving the number of road deaths and serious injuries by 2030. A difficult task, for which it also receives many subsidies: almost 6 million euros per year.
In addition, Vias is also developing a whole range of commercial activities. For example, the institute owns several driving schools, sells alcohol interlocks and also gives courses, such as skidding on a night road surface.
The federal government now wants to check whether those commercial activities and the public task are sufficiently separated, says Minister Gilkinet in the newspaper. “This will make it possible to work even better with Vias in the future in the crucial field of road safety,” said the minister. “We want to take all road users into account. And certainly the active road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, who are the most vulnerable.”
The audit must be completed in three months.
