At the D66 conference last weekend, Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf joked that the VVD ministers more often participate in the cabinet’s weekly sports hour, because otherwise they would not be able to keep up with the pace at which the cabinet implements D66 policy. Innocent joke of a free spirit, but he forgot the old wisdom: never boast when you win. You should always allow the other person to retreat. It is unwise to pack your coalition partners with butter and sugar first, and then rub it in publicly. That’s called: adding seizure to injury: Add another insult after damage done.
