Over the next three years, Minister Conny Helder for Long-Term Care and Sport will invest 150 million euros in training carers and nurses in district nursing. This is stated in the Investment Agreement Training District Nursing signed today, which should lead to sufficient and well-trained district nurses. It is expected that without measures, the current shortage in the Netherlands will rise to 10,500 district nurses in 2027 in the coming years. Together with ActiZ, Nurses and Caregivers Netherlands, Zorgthuisnl and Zorgverzekeraars Nederland, Minister Helder wants to tackle this growing shortage with this agreement.

Minister Helder: “Nurses and carers are the beating heart of care in the district. We are getting older and want to live at home as long as possible. That is why we will also receive more care at home in the future. This demands more from the district nurse. She has a central role in organizing care nearby. A role that will become even more important in the future than it already is. That is why we are investing in training the district nurses of the future with this agreement.”

Train more and differently

The aim of the investment agreement is to train more and differently in order to prevent a greater shortage of professionals in district nursing. With this agreement, the parties are committed to providing a strong training offer with continuous learning pathways, so that care providers in district nursing can train and retrain more helpers, carers, nurses and nursing specialists.

This goal must be achieved by creating an attractive learning climate for students, trainees and professionals already working in the care sector and by setting up a regional training offer. Form and content are given to education and training in district nursing in an innovative, future-proof and efficient manner. Based on the agreements in this investment agreement, a renewed training structure in district nursing is being designed. For this purpose, Minister Helder has made 50 million euros available per year for the next three years. In the near future, the parties will make concrete agreements on how to spend these resources.
