Minister Frank Vandenbroucke orders monkey pox vaccines for healthcare staff | Inland

Belgium subscribes to the European purchase of vaccines against the monkeypox virus. The federal government has given the green light for this, reports Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke. In total, this concerns 1250 vaccines for monkeypox. This would be enough to treat 625 people. In particular, the vaccines will be used by healthcare providers. “The close cooperation with other European member states means that we can take action quickly,” says Frank Vandenbroucke.

What symptoms do you get from monkey pox? This is what virologist Marc Van Ranst says:

ImvanexTM’s smallpox vaccine is not yet available in Europe. Pending the ongoing discussions at EU level and the approval of the expertise centre, our country has already decided to register with the European Health Crisis Authority HERA and to purchase a small stock of vaccines.

“We want to use these vaccines in particular for healthcare providers at high risk after exposure to the virus. This is possible, for example, if they have not used personal protective equipment or if there is a risk of serious illness,” says Frank Vandenbroucke.

“The new initiative that the European Commission has taken to jointly purchase vaccines from the European HERA is working. In this way we are better prepared for future pandemics and we can decide more quickly together with other European member states and proceed to joint purchases.”

Health institute Sciensano announced on Wednesday that six cases of the monkeypox virus have been confirmed in our country. There is also one probable case.
