Minister Diependaele gives the go-ahead for restoration work on the Yser Tower

The Yser Tower pays tribute to the Flemish fallen during the First World War and with its 84 meters is the highest peace monument in Europe. The site also forms the backdrop for the annual Yser pilgrimage.

Renew the entire exterior facade

During the works, the entire outer facade will be renewed, because it is in poor condition due to rain and wind. The protected monument has already been tackled on the inside, with the museum also being completely renovated. Now it’s the turn of the outside.

According to Minister Diependaele, investments in heritage also have great social added value. “The tower is part of our history and our identity. In addition, this monument brings a universal message of peace, which is again very topical today,” says Minister Diependaele.

Investment of 1.2 million euros

The previous thorough restoration dates back to 1997. The works must be completed by 2025. The Flemish government is paying 1.2 million euros for the restoration, which will cost a total of 2.2 million euros.
