Minimum wage will increase from next year | NOW

The cabinet wants to start raising the minimum wage as early as next year, sources report on Wednesday RTL News and NOS† Previously, the minimum wage would increase from 2024, but that will now be a year earlier.

The minimum wage for someone aged 21 or older is now 1,725 euros gross per month. The cabinet wanted to increase that amount in two steps by 7.5 percent in 2024 and 2025. That will be three steps from next year, while the percentage remains 7.5.

In the first step, the state pension increases along with the minimum wage, reports the NOS† It is unclear whether this also applies to the other two steps. The cabinet’s plan is likely to be approved on Friday during the Council of Ministers.

Previously, the government did not want the AOW to rise along with wages, but this was widely criticized by the opposition.

About 15 percent of young people up to the age of 25 earn the minimum wage. This is 3 percent for employees aged 25 and older.

Improvement: An earlier version of this message stated that the cabinet will not increase wages wanted to increase in line with the state pension. That was incorrect, it was exactly the other way around: the government did not want the state pension to increase in line with wages. The message has therefore been amended.
