The statutory minimum wage increases at the turn of the year to 13.90 euros gross per hour worked.
Previously, the minimum wage was 12.82 euros. The increase, regulated by a Ministry of Labor regulation, is based on a recommendation from the Minimum Wage Commission in June. At the beginning of 2027, the minimum wage will rise further to 14.60 euros. In parallel with the minimum wage increase, the upper limit for so-called mini-jobs is also rising. This will increase from January 556 to 603 euros per month.
There has been a general statutory minimum wage in Germany since January 1, 2015. At that time, the lower wage limit started at 8.50 euros. According to the law, a commission made up of representatives of employers’ associations and trade unions and advised by scientists decides on the adjustment every two years. Only in 2022 was an increase to 12 euros required by law.
For part-time employees – with the exception of mini-jobbers in the private sector – there is an obligation to document working hours. The hours worked must also be documented in economic sectors that are considered susceptible to incorrect billing with low wages – such as the construction industry, restaurants or the logistics sector.
The Minimum Wage Commission is primarily based on the development of collective wages and the average wage in Germany. The SPD had campaigned with the demand for a 15 euro minimum wage.
