On January 1, 2024, the statutory minimum wage will increase by 3.75 percent. The statutory gross minimum hourly wage for employees aged 21 and over is €13.27 per hour. This is a regular indexation, the minimum wage increases every six months in line with the collective labor agreement wages. At the same time, the cabinet will introduce a new law for the minimum hourly wage as of January 1, 2024.
The introduction of the statutory minimum hourly wage means that there are no longer legally prescribed minimum daily, weekly and monthly wages. In its place will be a single uniform minimum hourly wage, to which all employees in the Netherlands are entitled. The monthly wage of a minimum wage earner will soon be determined by the actual number of hours worked. It is still the case that minimum wage earners who work 40 hours have a lower hourly wage than people who work 36 hours. That inequality will come to an end. The minimum hourly wage is the result of the private member’s bill by MPs Kathmann and Maatoug.
The introduction of the minimum hourly wage may require adjustments to payroll administrations, employment contracts and collective labor agreements.
