Two of the deceased victims are Colombians, the other two have yet to be identified, the government of the Cusco region, where the ancient Inca city is located, said. Among the injured are four French, two Greeks, two Israelis, two Canadians, two Argentines, two Peruvians, the Dutchman and another person of unknown nationality. Some of them are transferred by air force plane to the Peruvian capital Lima.
The accident happened about 100 kilometers from the city of Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire and the main departure point for many World Heritage visitors. Every day about 5000 tourists visit Machu Picchu, which was built in the 15th century by the Inca emperor Pachacutec.
