The municipality of Emmen thinks that the money it receives, in total almost 2 million euros, is not sufficient for the long term. The municipality expects that the extra activities that will be started with the extra government funding will also be desirable after the 2024-2025 school year. “A few examples of activities that have been started are: deploying preventive speech therapy, expanding the number of healthy schools, focusing on preventive compulsory education, extra school social work, extra youth work and distributing picture books,” the municipality explains in the financial policy documents.
The money is needed because educational disadvantages also affect the further careers of young people. “The most recent figures show, among other things, that the number of young people leaving education without a basic qualification is increasing and is now higher than the (nationally determined) target percentage for early school leavers.”
